Groove's Faves: Conan the Comic Strip

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! How 'bout some Conan by Roy Thomas and John Buscema? Yeah, and not just any Conan, but Conan the Comic Strip! Back in 1978, the Robert E. Howard Estate, Register and Tribune Syndicate, and Marvel Comics got it all together to put Conan the Barbarian in what should have been one of the most natural environments of all for our fave pulp barbarian--the funny pages! Of course, Roy and John were the best possible choices to bring Conan and company to daily strip life, as you're about to see! Whaddya say we dig on the first seven weeks of that sensational strip, in color, thanks to their having been reprinted in Marvel Treasury Edition #23 (August 1979)! Crom!

Black and White Wednesday: "Coggin's Army" by McKenzie and Salvador

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Here's an early Roger McKenzie mini-masterpiece from Creepy #89 (April 1977) drawn by Martin Salvador, "Coggin's Army"! Ol' Groove really digs this kinda-sorta One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-by-way-of-The Twilight Zone psychological thriller--hope you do, too!

Oh, and if you dig Rog as much as I do (and why wouldn't ya?), get your paws on his latest comic if you haven't already done so! Roger McKenzie's Total Frenzy is far-freakin' out, baby!

Groove's Faves: "Hellfire and Holocaust" by Conway, Giffen, and Wood

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! We're back with another awesome episode of The All-Star Supersquad/ Justice Society of America from All-Star Comics #61 (April 1976)! Gerry Conway, Keith Giffen (Don'tcha just love his layouts? He packed so much action and drama into 17 pages!), and Wally Wood were really clicking with this ish, baby! A very cool villain (visually especially), lots of action, a bit of anguish (what about Dr. Fate?), and even a few pages setting up the next ish! Nice character moments, as well, with Jay Garrick and his wife Joan, Wildcat, and Power Girl (almost always a show-stealer). And wrapped up nicely under an Ernie Chan cover, to boot! Enjoy!

Marvel-ous Monday: "Murder In Mid-Air!" by Englehart, Sutton, and Giacoia

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Under this stunning Jim Starlin/Joe Sinnott cover lies a pretty important story in the life of the Bludgeoning Beast! He makes a promise to Patsy (Baxter) Walker(which he'll keep in Avengers #144*), his fur turns a dark shade of our favorite, familiar blue, and an old friend returns (and Ol' Groove's not just talking about The Angel)! Toss in the debut of The Griffin (a minor villain with a lot of appearances), and you've got yourself a pretty far-out comic! From Amazing Adventures #15 (August 1972**), prepare to witness a..."Murder In Mid-Air!"

*Shhhh...

**Yep, Young Groove got this one for his 9th birthday!
